Zond 3 was launched from a Tyazheliy Sputnik (65-056B) earth orbiting platform towards the moon and interplanetary space. The spacecraft was equipped with an f106 mm camera and TV system that provided automatic inflight film processing. On July 20, 1965 lunar flyby occurred approximately 33 hours after launch at a closest approach of 9200 km. 25 pictures of very good quality were taken of the lunar farside from distances of 11,570 to 9960 km over a period of 68 minutes. The photos covered 19,000,000 square km of the lunar surface. Photo transmissions by facsimile were returned to earth from a distance of 2,200,000 km and were retransmitted from a distance of 31,500,000 km (some signals still being transmitted from the distance of the orbit of Mars), thus proving the ability of the communications system. After the lunar flyby, Zond 3 continued space exploration in a heliocentric orbit.

I have circled several anomalies:

This structure (below), seen at the extreme top right edge of the Zond 3 photo, on the horizon of the moon about 100 kilometers south-south-west of Grimaldi I estimate to be about 20 to 30 miles long and 10 to 15 miles high. On the left side of the structure are 3 enormous, circular tanks, each of a different size. On the right side of the structure there appears to be an enormous arch:

John what is with the large black spot on the moon that seemed to get lighter ever time the russians sent another one up and took photos?

i have seen some photos from the russians zonds and the black spot gets lighter each zond

is that a big lake?

That is Mare Orientale and may be a lake. I don't know that for sure but I do know that there are several large lakes on the farside.

I don't know why it should get lighter.

http://astrogeology.usgs.gov/Proj...unarConsortium/browse/em2_col.jpg

check the bring spot on the moon

it's not big but it's the brighest spot on the moon (in that section, there seems to be a few little bright glowy spots)

to me it has a glow to it

just found this right now trying to find the zond images i first saw

That is Aristarchus. It is some type of nuclear reactor, maybe fusion. It is about 26 miles in diameter:

Galileo SSI Lunar Earth/Moon Encounter

so the picture you posted was the english guys right? (Image Credit: Mike Deegan)

how old is the one i posted?

i am having a hard time finding the date this picture was taken at

http://astrogeology.usgs.gov/Projects/LunarConsortium/

you can download the red, green and other versions of the pic (maybe not)

it says

Encounter II Data
Band Data
red Download Label
green Download Label
violet Download Label
756 Download Label
889 Download Label
968 Download Label

they come in like 35 meg .img files

i can open image files though just need to get a program (i assume it's same .img file as you see when it comes to burning cd's)

no i can't open the files at all

Sad

tried with the windows image preview program, tried with infranview like windows said, and i tried with MagicISO

and nothing

and when i rotate the image it's basically is the same one you posted (the little arm or w/e is at a better angle when rotated)

like holy freakin blow my mind here

i am looking at the full moon from the pic you posted, and i can see that it is indeed the crater, and the "lights were on" (in both pics)

i just wish i could get a date for the photo, i can't find anything about galileo dates except 1989

This Zond 7 has had a considerable amount of obscuration applied. Compare the approximate same section  looking generally east north east with Mare Orientale in right center. Mare Orientale is the big black splotch.

Now look at the same approximate section on thephoto from Zond 3:

In both photos that black dot in the 2 o'clock position  from Mare Orientale is Grimaldi.

Here is Zond 7 with a few of the most prominent features identified. For instance the approximate location of the famous arch located in the extreme lower right on the horizon of Zond 3 is located to the lower center left here on this Zond 7 photo:

You can see tht the entire land mass has been obscured with filtering and white out. I believe that this filtering is to obscure the city and structures on the moon.
